It may only be late January but I’m sure most of you have broken at least a few of your new year resolutions. Whether your resolution was to eat healthier, travel more, get more sleep, or even to lose weight, resolutions are always fun to make, but keeping them is a different story! Winter arrives and it’s a lot more fun to eat popcorn and binge-watch on Netflix than it is to work out and eat boring food.
Thankfully, there’s no need to fret about breaking those resolutions to get healthier anymore! I have found something that can tone you, make your posture better, and burn calories all at the same time, not to mention it’s really fun! I recently discovered Shine Pilates in Lexington and I’m hooked.
I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of exercise. I like to walk, I try to park far away from my destination, and I try to get my 10,000 steps in daily, but as far as going to a gym or taking an excercise class, that’s not really me. Gyms are crowded and can be a little germy, not to mention you have to wear makeup! I have noticed as I’ve gotten older I’m a little more stiff in the morning and it’s harder to jump out of bed and get going. In the morning it’s snap, crackle, and pop! I really need to find a way to get a good stretch and feel better.
Shine Pilates is located in Lexington and has been open for almost a year. The owner, and head instructor, Lucie Becus, is a PMA (Pilates Method Alliance) certified teacher with over 10 years of experience teaching Pilates. She’s very patient with her clients and makes sure that you are using the machines correctly. Once you get used to the machines they aren’t so scary. They may look like torture machines, but they are a fun way to tone up. I felt a lot better after just one visit!
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Pilates, it’s a fitness system that was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, according to Wikipedia. The system is based around the core of the body and it works to strengthen and build control. The weights aren’t necessarily very heavy, but keeping control while using the machine builds strength and also improves coordination, flexibility, and balance.
Shine Pilates has several Pilates machines that are called Reformers. The boutique studio has machines that are available for classes or private instruction. Because the studio isn’t super big it makes it much easier to have personal instruction from Lucie even during classes. It’s easy to be intimidated by Pilates, or any new exercise, but Lucie makes you confident that you are using the machines correctly and that you are not totally uncoordinated! I’ve never done Yoga or Pilates, so to say I was a newbie was an understatement.
The studio is very calm, the music isn’t blasting, there’s potted plants, and also candles burning. The music varies from country to pop. Due to the class size being small it’s a great way to meet people and form a type of bond together while using the machines and working out. It’s a nice place to workout. Everybody gets special attention, which is something you don’t get in large gyms.
Normally people sign up for eight classes for the month but there is definitely flexibility in the memberships. Classes are hel several times a day, a few after work and on the weekends. You can drop in or sign up online for packages for 3, 6, or 12 months. Whatever works best for you. There’s plenty of parking in back so you don’t have to worry about not being able to find a place to park (because I’m always running late!). Pilates has something for everyone including pre-natal, postpartum, and people with chronic conditions. You can even use your FSA (Flexible Spending Account) to pay for your membership.
Be sure that you wear yoga pants or something that stretches easily. You are put in some interesting positions so you want to be prepared! Also, if you have socks with tread on the bottom be sure to bring them. You have to have tread on some of the routines so you don’t fall. If you don’t have any don’t worry, you can buy them there or Lucie can give you something to use to help.
Pilates is a great way to workout on your lunch hour. You don’t get hot and sweaty so its perfect to take a quick class and get back to work. Make sure to check out Shine Pilates. You will love it! xoxo
